“Every child deserves a champion--an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection, and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.”-Rita Pierson
My Teaching Philosophy
As an educator, I give students the tools to become knowledgeable and thoughtfully seek the truth about the natural world and its processes. As natural beings, this knowledge and thoughtfulness can also teach them about themselves and their place in the universe. The use of inquiry, scientific method, collaboration with others, discussion, problem solving, critical thinking, connection of content to real world scenarios, and hands-on opportunities like labs and personal projects give students the opportunity to analyze the reality we inhabit in a constructive way, without fear of failure. In a time where anything we want to know is at our fingertips, I provide students with the skills to seek information that is unbiased and based in fact through scientific literacy and careful research. Practicing 21st-Century Skills in the classroom enables them to navigate the digital world as ethical digital citizens and find utility in technology. I honor every student and their uniqueness by offering learning modes for multiple intelligences and incorporating differentiation into my classroom as an everyday practice.

Classroom Management
The overall goal in my classroom is to create a space where the students feel welcome, ready to learn, can be themselves and develop social skills that they can use in their lives outside of school. Modeling a positive attitude everyday can encourage my students to think positively about their day and their ability to meet classroom expectations. By setting clear boundaries and explaining what the expectations will be from the very beginning of the year, I give students much needed structure and clarity about their role as the learner in my classroom. I want students to know that I am in their corner and I believe they can do great things. I assist my students in adopting a growth mindset about themselves and casting off limiting beliefs about their abilities in education. I honor my students by offering them respect and celebrating their uniqueness, while encouraging every student in class to do the same for their classmates. Punctuality, kindness, curiosity, self-efficacy, accountability, honesty and a good sense of humor are traits that I model for my students in the hopes that they absorb them into their own lives.
